BJ, or Boyd Johnson, thinks himself the ladies man. He couldn't be more wrong, but that doesn't stop him from trying to woo the fairer sex when he can.
Holly is Melvin's crush. After the genie incident, Holly is aware that Melvin likes her, but there is a little too much strangeness surrounding Melvin and his friends for Holly's liking.
Young new genie, formerly a human. She had to spend at least one day training with an older experience genie. Kazom mentored Jeanie, but did nothing as she ran a muck with her magic. Including turning Melvin's redhead friend into a girl (which she happened to forget to reverse before her departing).
Character from CD's popular comic, "I Dream of Jeanie Bottle".
Kazom is a 3,000 year old genie. In order to conserve power and thereby extend his life, Kazom does as little magic as possible. He is bound in the form of the Clark family's cat and mostly just lays around Melvin's Room.
Red was a boy until a new genie tried to get Melvin a girlfriend. That's when the genie turned Red into a girl so Melvin could practice talking to girls, and forgot to turn her back before disappearing. Red is hopeful that her situation is only temporary.
I like how Jeanie is there its a great recreation of the original panel and major attention to detail at least in the first on the one where red becomes a girl they were sitting at a table in the original just saying.
Well, fun story, this recreations of old panels are actually quite old, they were practice to get used to the characters, and also part of discarded idea to make a resume of the story so far. In that context, the table was removed to get a more dramatic and detailed shot. Still, now in the context of the plot, this is Hypnos, and here in the memories of Melvin, he also remembers the event a little more dramatic, at least in his dreams.
If this were Red’s dreams, Jeanie would be dressed as Cersei Lannister and would be laughing hysterically while Red’s body gets exposed to the cameras of the paparazzi and her parents on the backside try to hurry her to put on her princess dress… Yeah, for her it isn’t a pleasant memory.
Why “Ser” and not “Sir”? Could be a misspelling, but I doubt it. “Ser” is a title for a knight in A Song of Fire and Ice (which I haven’t read any of; just George R. R. Martin’s Aces series.) It’s also found in Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series as the courtesy title for males on the planet Komarr in Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance. Maybe Carlos read one or the other or both?
So Kazom is going through Melvin’s old dreams, not inside a dream Melvin is having now. I guess old dreams are stored in the Realm of Hypnos, or at least file copies. Exactly why Kazom is here isn’t clear yet. Maybe looking for a clue about something Melvin is either not telling Kazom, or something Melvin doesn’t consciously remember or recognize as being important.
I think from their silhouettes the three succubi have long goblin ears instead of horns, but they do definitely have barbed tails, rather like the succubi over in Dangerously Chloe.
Is Dangerously Chloe worth reading? I read Eerie Cuties and Magick Chicks, but I was never enough of a Chloe fan to consider reading her spin-off. Was that a mistake?
I . . . have a lot of questions. I think the only one that won’t cause spoilers is, why is Melvin having (guessing because of the red aura) angry dreams about Saachi?
Also, crazy thought time, but I have a sneaking hunch that Hypnos is sentient to some extent.
Well, is not so much Melvin having “angry” dreams about Saachi, or even being mad at her himself, but more a question of having a very vivid memory of a very angry Saachi.
Say, Carlos, I’ve been meaning to ask this for a bit, and since she’s on this page . . . who exactly, out of the cast and her family, knows that Saachi is a lesbian, aside from Melvin and Holly? And who, out of those people, does she know are aware of her sexuality?
Hard to answer, it can either be spoiler for character development, or just irrelevant trivia. Let’s see.
Saachi just come out of the closest recently, I deduce that from the original run with both Melvin and BJ having no idea about it, even with Saachi being seemingly familiar with both of them. Still, Holly always knew, and both our main cast (Melvin, BJ,Red and Kazom) and Saachi’s family are aware of her sexuality, alongside most of the school at this point. Besides them, I can only name Ida without spoiling much.
You have no idea, in general keeping notes from your characters and general plans for the story is important, and of course I have some. But I also have to add notes at what happens or have happened back at Jeannie Bottle to avoid contradictions with the story over there, or keep note of any relevant information about the world revealed over there.
Then, of course there is also the story so far on BACH-MANN run, of which as I said some moths ago, I don’t know what was planed for it’s future, so I had to keep notes of all that was revealed back there, the plot lines that started, where I deduce they were going, or where I want to take them, what I liked, what I didn’t, characters relationships, as so one. Not to mentions details I missed the first time, like the fact tha BJ has a sister, or that his father is the owner of Snack to the Future, a detail I would has miss completely if CD didn’t mention it to me on a casual chat, then I re-read the whole comic until I found the reference!
I have some idea. My desk has two notebooks full of background information for some fanfictions I’ve been meaning to write. The campaign setting for our RPG sessions is even bigger. The system does help, though.
Kazom see the three succubus too, but, up to this point has chosen to ex nor them. But, now he going to ask question of them, which is what they didn’t want him doing or knotting them either. Evidently they have had a bad experience with Kazom and would just assume not having any more run in with Kazom now.
I was just looking at it again, in Panel two behind Kazom is kind of a baby crattle with a blue sheet or cover and those creature are inside there and Panel one is kind of a blow up of that inside darkness there with there eye.
I think you broke the no swear code of the comic. I cant remember I Dream of a Genie Bottle or MC swearing before. You don’t have to swear to tell a great story. Take a look at the Dreamland Chronicles, an epic story and never a swear word in sight.
You could go “Freaking genie lord” “no crap” “Man those three…” “great ser jerk (or something suiting)”
Jean’s cursed before (check I Dream of Another Genie, as one example), and some issues of the BACH-MANN run had . . . other questionable content. Besides, I suspect the budget Lock, Shock, and Barrel there are in dire need of a lesson in manners, courtesy of Harry “Galahad” Hart.
Well, He Who Abides already pointed this, but the true is, foul lenguage is not new to either the Melvin Chronicles, not I Dream of a Jeanie Bottle, in fact, one of the pages from our previous run is tittle “Stupid Bitch Face”, and examples like that can be found at various points of the run.
With that said, I completely agree that I don’t need to use swear words in any given story, and usually is something I try to not use lightly. Still, besides the ocasional cursing that may feel natural at any given moment during the dialogue (Crapbaskets not to long ago), or some clues about the feelings of some characters (I hope the tittle of “Great Ser Asshole” gives an idea of Uranus relationship with Kazom), sometimes I try to use the vocabulary to give an idea as to what kind of character we are dealing with. With “Yellow” here, I hope to give a decent idea of what kind of person she is, and how she is different of “Pink” who also have her own personal quirks, and even “Green”, though she doesn’t get to much dialogue.
And this is not the first time I do something like this, sometimes is fun to look up which characters do NOT curse. Not to long ago I introduce Deborah and her lackeys, and don’t know if someone notices, but while Maddison, her redhead friend have quite the foul mouth, Deborah herself avoids using any kind of swearing, with terms like Tarnation, and no bigger insults than Newbie or Witch. This is a detail I try to use to flesh out more of her character, in the little pages I use to introduce her.
So my apologize if language like this may be uncomfortable for any reader, in normal circumstances I would have avoid it myself, but due to being already present in the context of the story, I now try to use it mostly in a way that can help the story, characters and dialogue, even in a minor way, instead of just pretend that it was never there. Still, I promise that as long as we are not dealing with “Yellow “over here, or other characters like her, I will not use this vocabulary lightly. Thanks for your feedback.
maybe I’m just getting my comics mixed up, but it was a slight shock to see such swear words, ive been taught that the f word is taboo in the writing word unless you world is say, gangsters or pirates or something. vAfter all, having a gangster say fing ass is far less of a shock than having a nun say the same, or Jesus (censored) Christ when ticked off.
Although I do think that’s a tad bit over the top.
There pretty good about not trying to over use dirty language here. As long as they don’t get carried away with using curse words I am OK with it. The other thing that some writers here use is sex and get graffiti with it too. But, they don’t use that kind of stuff here at Melvin Chronicle or at Jeanie Bottle which I kind of like. They generally give you a pretty good story too.
I finally figured out that the “Irish cow” is Tiffany Thornton: red hair, large endowment, and a surname that can be Irish. If you’ve ever seen The Quiet Man which I’m pretty sure is required by law to be on TV on St. Patrick’s day, the role that John Wayne played was Sean “Trooper” Thornton, a retired boxer.
I seems that Kazom is dreaming too if he thinks that Melvin will stay out of trouble.
Just saying it is tempting fate.
I like how Jeanie is there its a great recreation of the original panel and major attention to detail at least in the first on the one where red becomes a girl they were sitting at a table in the original just saying.

> her parents on the backside try to put her in a princess dress
Now that you’ve said this, you know it has to happen, right? 🙂
So in Melvin’s old dreams, Jeanie seems to be bigger in the breast area then we remember her being….
Either that, or its the new art style depicting her.
So time passes differently in this realm, though wouldn’t Kazom just wake up normally if someone disturbs him in the real world?
@SageM:
Re: Waking up normally – this is a magical spell, not normal sleep. So, probably not.
It appears to be Kazom that dreaming about the past or as Kattfirl put it magical spell dream to view the past to see what happened.
Funny, it’s usually that time passes faster when you’re dreaming than in the real world.
“What kind of sick wet dream is that?”
Possibly my kind. I’ll thank you not to judge.
Carlos/Robert: In Panel 3 – “Great Ser” – is that a typo, or intentional?
Why “Ser” and not “Sir”? Could be a misspelling, but I doubt it. “Ser” is a title for a knight in A Song of Fire and Ice (which I haven’t read any of; just George R. R. Martin’s Aces series.) Poo. You beat me to the George R.R. Martin mention. El zilcho 🙁
Tom is right, this is the correct spelling. Like a few other things on this page, the eccentricities of the dialog have simply not yet been explained.
So Kazom is going through Melvin’s old dreams, not inside a dream Melvin is having now. I guess old dreams are stored in the Realm of Hypnos, or at least file copies. Where else are you going to find a high school in Hell? Or Betty Crotcher’s (Genuine) Devil’s Food Cake? Now at #618, with TG.
@Tom Sewell – okay, then. I’ll give it a shot once Misfile wraps up, which might be after this chapter (if the cover for it is anything to go by).
“After this chapter…”
…
…
…
Oh sorry I think I blacked out thinking about the release schedule of the last chapter for SailorSun.org… *shiver*

Okay, that makes sense. Good to know.
Let’s see.

Thanks, dude. I’m guessing you have a bunch of notes written down dealing with the characters’ backstories and what-not, right?
You have no idea, in general keeping notes from your characters and general plans for the story is important, and of course I have some. Is it me or does the aura around Holly look like a pink valentine heart. I noticed the one around Red looks kind of pink as well.
So who are his friends with the colorful eyes?
I was just looking at it again, in Panel two behind Kazom is kind of a baby crattle with a blue sheet or cover and those creature are inside there and Panel one is kind of a blow up of that inside darkness there with there eye.

@InsaneXade – I believe the comic you were thinking of was The Wotch. Even Anne’s personified rage can’t swear in that one.

Just don’t play the video game known as The Quiet Man. It’s apparently quite awful.
