Holly is Melvin's crush. After the genie incident, Holly is aware that Melvin likes her, but there is a little too much strangeness surrounding Melvin and his friends for Holly's liking.
Red was a boy until a new genie tried to get Melvin a girlfriend. That's when the genie turned Red into a girl so Melvin could practice talking to girls, and forgot to turn her back before disappearing. Red is hopeful that her situation is only temporary.
I think you mean “Any sufficiently advanced technology” since a minor advancement in technology probably would be fairly distinguishable. I do agree with Clarke’s third law even outside the borders of science fiction, people often see things and makes assumptions and call it magic, however any phenomenon that manifests in the physical world and has evidence of such, can be studied through science, no matter how absurd or spectacular the phenomenon seems. science doesn’t stop where “Magic” begins, Magic is just a filler for those who do not understand. not that any of this has to do with the comic… you just awoke my inner (and outer) nerd with that reference 😀
No, I’ll stick with “advanced.” Do many people here understand everything that makes a lightbulb work? (Well, yeah, probably, but this is a pretty sufficiently advanced crowd.)
So, it appears Liam knows about psyching our his opponents before battle. Inviting Holly to his party will get Melvin off-balance if he finds out about it, and Liam will certainly mare sure he finds out. Better yet if Liam can convince Holly to hang out with him during the competition, though that seems a bit far-fetched unless he outright bribes her.
Oh, and Liam, don’t be such a dick. Pick up a coffee for you mom while you’re there. Too narrow a focus may come back to bite you . . .
From what I can make out, they’re talking about a girl who is apparently jealous of Red for being a model AND apparently having had a boob job–because OF COURSE a jealous rival would never want to admit that Red’s boobs could be anything but surgically enhanced. Red, of course, hadn’t realized until just now that people were thinking that she had breast implants instead of natural boobs.
Heavy- It sounds, to me like Red is referring to a teacher(school mistress), who chose her to feed the snakes for the semester. Red thinks this other girl hates her for that….Lol
She’s still learning how girls think….thankfully, it looks like, she has some help.
I don’t think we’re supposed to know what’s going on in panel 3, but it’s supposed to send the message that Red’s school is a Byzantine web of cattery not worth understanding.
well at least Red made a friend (I assume. She could also be a plant sent by Red’s enemies sent to gain Red’s trust and then later betray her in the most heartbreaking way possible. Girls do that right? Right?!)
The background in panel 4 is indoors in front of a computer, not outdoors like in panels 1 and 2. So it’s probably supposed to be some time after panels 1 and 2. That plus both people holding smartphones in panels 3 and 4 does seem to imply that Red’s “friend” is texting Liam.
No, it’s a normal girls’ middle school. It only looks Byzantine and catty because it’s a girl’s…Oh.
(But seriously, I expect it all makes perfect sense to a large collection of hot blooded young females who all believe they are the dramatic leads in their own personal soap operas.)
Snack to the Future….hahaha! Looks like it’s a molecular gastronomy joint, though I can’t see the entire sign. That would make sense that the guy is ordering a ‘my little foamy’….cool!
It seems Liam usually plays a necromancer…figured he was making reference to that, though it could be alluding to something else. CD’s universe does have witches/warlocks and genies. Who knows, there may be other things that have yet to be explored.
@Raen: But i think what’s happening here is that somehow, Liam expects to cheat.
Alternatively, he plans to humiliate Melvin by stealing his “girlfriend”, or at least getting her to attend his “party”, and take pictures of her in her bathing suit.
Anyway, he expects to humiliate Melvin and his friends by underhanded ways. And I predict that he will be exposed and humiliated in turn.
For which I offer 1:1 odds. In shiny smooth pebbles.
Oh! I came back and found a wild “Meanwhile” had appeared, that makes it clearer. Good job. I don’t know if the translucent speech bubbles are intentional or not.
My solution to the panel three mystery hinges on the girl with Red on the bus who is using a cellphone. In panel 4, Liam is gloating–cellphone in hand.
In other words, Liam has spies, possibly purchased with his undesrved wealth (or blackmailed–another classic villain trope.)
Looks like Red needs some Deportment lesson. Ladies do not sit with their legs spread in pubic.
Men shouldn’t sit like that either. But the pants wearing gender can have a little more leniency.
I am a Guy LOL. Sitting with legs spread in pubic shows a lack of class, or a possible infection/infestation of the land down under and i am not talking about Austria.
Good thing for Red that those skirts are very pleated and not tight or she may learn an embarrassing lesson, then again it may still take a long time before she learns why not to sit like that.
Hmmmm….
I mentioned Cosplay in an earlier comment as a step
toward Red’s acting career.
She’d be perfect for the War Mallet movie… If they made one.
What’s the name of Red’s new friend? It’s not in the tags.
I really think that Red should change her name to Scarlet
Red is just a nickname and she probably likes it because it’s masculine.
Red would probably disagree with you.
“Any advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

A big hard magic fan? You like Brandon Sanderson. If not I recommend you check him out.

I don’t understand what’s up with panel 3 at all. It comes out of nowhere. Did I miss something?
From what I can make out, they’re talking about a girl who is apparently jealous of Red for being a model AND apparently having had a boob job–because OF COURSE a jealous rival would never want to admit that Red’s boobs could be anything but surgically enhanced. If you have a real plot line to this thing, I cannot detect it.
PLO-OT! HERE PLOTTY, PLOTTY! PLOT? Here boy!
A few things…
Panel 3 seems to come out of nowhere (maybe it’s cutting to different conversations happening at the same time?)
Why is a “School Mistress” younger than 18?
They have Robots?! (I suppose it could be animatronic with a computer generated response.)
Heavy- It sounds, to me like Red is referring to a teacher(school mistress), who chose her to feed the snakes for the semester. Red thinks this other girl hates her for that….Lol
She’s still learning how girls think….thankfully, it looks like, she has some help.
Ah, now that I re-read it, it makes sense now.
I don’t think we’re supposed to know what’s going on in panel 3, but it’s supposed to send the message that Red’s school is a Byzantine web of cattery not worth understanding.

I think the phones are a coincidence, it’s 2015, most kids have phones that they are on ALL the time.
I have added new location tags. Check them out. 😉
It’s part of the game.
No, it’s a normal girls’ middle school. It only looks Byzantine and catty because it’s a girl’s…Oh.

So wait, Liam is a… witch? Wizard? Warlock? Dunno, the setting page on IDoaJB only mentions “witches.”
I guess that sets up a nice parallel.
I think he’s referring to spells in War Mallet.
It seems Liam usually plays a necromancer…figured he was making reference to that, though it could be alluding to something else. CD’s universe does have witches/warlocks and genies. Who knows, there may be other things that have yet to be explored.
Huh? Thats is an regular idiom as far as i am aware, a little mangled perhaps …
@Raen: But i think what’s happening here is that somehow, Liam expects to cheat.

Oh! Just noticed the invitation says ‘pre-victory’.
Liam needs to be taken down a notch or three.
Too much jumping around. You only allot yourself 4 panels a day. Two scene changes in four panels is a bit too much.
Oh! I came back and found a wild “Meanwhile” had appeared, that makes it clearer. Good job. I don’t know if the translucent speech bubbles are intentional or not.
They are intentional and late due to a birthday party I had to go to last night because it was mine. :p
Happy Birthday
Yes, Happy Birthday Luna—throws confetti—blows kazoo
Thank you, guys! It was an awesome time! ^_^
Congratulations on completing another journey around your local star!
[Yeah, call me when you get around your local galaxy a time or two. Provincials, sheesh.]

Or maybe he’s hacked into the girl’s cellphone?
Looks like Red needs some Deportment lesson. Ladies do not sit with their legs spread in pubic.
Men shouldn’t sit like that either. But the pants wearing gender can have a little more leniency.
Ahem. “Men shouldn’t”?
Good luck with that.
It’s uncomfortable for us to sit with our legs together.
Also, if you think manspreading is a patriarchal microaggression–absolutely right. Got a problem with that?
I am a Guy LOL. Sitting with legs spread in pubic shows a lack of class, or a possible infection/infestation of the land down under and i am not talking about Austria.
Insert arbitrary “social rules are arbitrary” comment here.
I suppose the term “boob job” can apply to breast enhancement even if it is magical rather than surgical.
Luna’s rendition of Holly reminds me of Gina Diggers. Nice one.
Bach-Mann, the artist, said his style was influenced by Fred Perry, the artist of Gold Digger.
As heavy mentioned Bach-Mann is the amazing artist, I just touch up and post it to the internet. 🙂
My mistake. Still nice.
Is the “my little foamy” *just* a MLP reference, or is it also a nod to Foamy the Squirrel, by any chance? 😀
Good thing for Red that those skirts are very pleated and not tight or she may learn an embarrassing lesson, then again it may still take a long time before she learns why not to sit like that.
