BJ, or Boyd Johnson, thinks himself the ladies man. He couldn't be more wrong, but that doesn't stop him from trying to woo the fairer sex when he can.
Red was a boy until a new genie tried to get Melvin a girlfriend. That's when the genie turned Red into a girl so Melvin could practice talking to girls, and forgot to turn her back before disappearing. Red is hopeful that her situation is only temporary.
I actually don’t ship Red and Melvin, figuring Melvin has an established preferred type and it isn’t Red. Besides, Red is a knockout and Melvin is Nerd of Magic. She can do better. LOL.
I ship Red(Clarence) with getting his manhood back, mainly by Jeannie reversing her spell, AND THEN! Clarence getting the magical ability to swap genders at will (like Ted and Elliot in El Goonish Shive).
The Covens want Melvin for his legacy/inheritance, his genes, and his magical potential, not for his charm and masculinity. If Melvin became a girl long-term, then they would switch to trying to marry her to one of their sons.
@ijuinkun In true, the only Coven that truly would benefit from Melvin being Female, would be the actual Azure Coven. Melvin being a boy, makes things easier for other Covens, as it is. Granted, if Melvin was female Azure Witch, and decided to not join the Azure, then things could get bloody on the streets… even more so than what they are already leaning to.
Also Red could be a real contender for him. She comes from a strong supernatural linage; she has been accepted into a prestigious school of witchcraft, and their strong friendship is also drawing them together. Melvin may also subconsciously sense she is more like him in other regards.
@ijuinkun, the Qual Euzma might do more than awaken her latent Witch potential, it may also awaken in her feeling of being a girl too. It was just a thought, I doubt it will happen.
Possibilities how Melvin’s attempt to bring Clarence back will go.
Idea 1 It’s fail completely because Genie magic, with BJ and Melvin possibly being changed to girls for a gag, or her boobs just get bigger
Idea 2 it works partially, with Red given the choice to switch between Clarence and Red at will, or with a catch possibly
Idea 3 it’s work partially works, however this one has Red split in 2 with the remnants of Clarence becoming their own separate entity with red still being the original, that way we get Both having to coexist. (For some reason this is my fav possibility)
Idea 4 the one I think is the most probable, nothing happens but they learn how it could be done and go quest for it, over the course of which she’ll decide she doesn’t want to change back and embraces Tiffany instead of fighting her. (and possibly because she realizes she’s into Melvin)
It already approaching one year that Red has been Tiffany now. Red became a girl at the beginning of 9th grade and now it the beginning of 10th grade now. If they do go on a quest to turn Tiffany back into Clarence and it goes into the eleven or twelfth grade before the can do it, then Red will have been a girl for two or three years. Red has already reached the point that she could accept being a girl, but, she would still like to go back to being a boy still.
Idea 5 Tiffany is turned back into a boy and now doesn’t like being a boy and want to go back to being girl now.
An at will transformation would suck most of the drama out of Red’s dilemma and turn this into a wish fulfillment story. We’ve already been informed that the author considers splitting a non-starter, and IDOAJB has told us that the genies have the ability to “fix” Jeanie and Guano’s incompatible orientations problem with the implications that fix would not involve a change of sex or gender because otherwise the fix wouldn’t resolve their Genie society not accepting homosexuality problem so there’s anther possibility.
It’s one of key initial branching points of any transformation story: is the transformation purely physical, physical and mental, or purely mental? Red’s transformation started out following the purely physical branch. Any future developments have to flow from that point.
I’d just like to point out that we don’t know for sure there is a magical faction that actually wants to mate Melvin and Red, just that there are some factions convinced that one or more of the other magical factions wants to mate Melvin and Red.
It has been suggested there were previous plans for marrying their parents, until Mary got pregnant from another man.
Does anybody know how does Mrs Thornton see Melvin? As a potential husband for Tiffany? A threat given his intents to restore her original gender? Irrelevant on the long run?
There no indication that Mrs Thornton knows anything at all and that she is just a normal female girl or women and that she out of the loop. So doubt that she involved in this clandestine operation to get Red or Tiffany to marry Melvin. Now the witches faction that revolves around Shouthheil high school and Mary Red mother, well that another story altogether and would not trust them even a little bit.
It’s fairly obvious that Red’s mother views Red’s transformation as a path to some sort of personal redemption, but no one knows her underlying reasons are magical or mundane. “Redeem our good name” or “Fulfill the promise that I was unable to fulfill” is just as likely as “fulfill our magical destiny” at this point.
I have a song stuck in my head after seeing the seventh image, ” Put your head on my shoulder, hold me in your arms, baby”. His look of total bliss, ” my Rose is back”, and her tender look, ” I’ve really missed him.
I still don’t understand why didn’t Kazom just use his contacts to find her. After all he was the one entrusted with her education.
Not to mention canonically Kazom and Jeanie will meet again, yet he will not even mention the problem with Red (granted Blue is a bigger priority at that point, but setting another meeting shouldn’t be that difficult).
@Dagor Kazom has become an outcast among the genies. They allow him to still act as one, but he has fallen of grace among most of them, with very few genies willing to even talk to him now. Asha still recognize him as a superior, but she barely cares, Araceli is oyal to Guano who isn’t in good terms with Kazom to begin with, and Lahab may had a good relationship with Kazom, but she has plenty of things to attend to, and for the major genies, Red’s predicament is fairly irrelevant. As for Kazom’s “encounter” with Jeanie in the palace, the whole thing got interrupted by Blue’s schemes.
Yes, compared with the fate of all Geniekind (the Blue Djinn affair), the fate of one single Mortal who isn’t even a Master is a mere afterthought, and Kazom only cares about Red at all because Red is Melvin’s friend.
As for Kazom being an outcast, he did work rather closely with a Witch (Thomas Clark), and it ended poorly for him (cat form, apparent reduction in available power). That would bring a lot of scorn from the more ideologically conservative Genies.
At this point, almost anything is possible. She is just too com and doesn’t seem to be even the least bit upset or surprised by what she seeing or hearing even. It almost like she either knew about or has had at least some experience with this stuff before she met Red. But, there also the possibility that she getting use to it too, because, she been around Red for almost a year now, since Red was turned into a girl.
Aww!

Red can do better than the heir of Azure? Right now the Covens are disputing him. Melvin is quite the catch by supernatural standards.
Also, how many girls can say their boyfriends would risk summoning Old Ones for their sake?

And there is always the chance that the attempt to use the Quat Euzma on Red will awaken her latent Witch potential. . .
@ijuinkun, the Qual Euzma might do more than awaken her latent Witch potential, it may also awaken in her feeling of being a girl too. It was just a thought, I doubt it will happen.
Ida is unusually chill considering she’s staring at a Lovecraftian Horror.
Melvin is resting his head comfortably.
The lady isn’t protesting.
Melvin, buddy? Maybe wait until you’re done negotiating with the Great Old One before saying hi?
Possibilities how Melvin’s attempt to bring Clarence back will go.

*commrnter’s note bring back Gigachad Kazom*

“Rose” is a dangerous name for Melvin to call, if you remember Kazom’s dealings with the fae. Meaning it will happen eventually.
What secrets, JJ???
Your headcanon gender-bender shipping between Red and their friends??????
We heard all about those in your first appearance 😛
Here is the scary food for thought. Her fanfiction isn’t a secret. There is no shame for her in there. So…
Carlos, your art has definitely gotten better; I particularly like panels 1, 4 & 5. Congratulations!
Thank you very much! It has been a long road for me since I started. I’s great to see you around here again!
My guess is that any attempt to change Clarence back to male will not work.
But in the process, they may discover a clue as to where to begin to look for Jeannie…
I still don’t understand why didn’t Kazom just use his contacts to find her. After all he was the one entrusted with her education.

Has anyone else noticed that Ida’s eyes are purple???
Could this be a clue that maybe she is more than just a normal driver/chaperone? Like, perhaps, a ‘plant’ from a coven, or the anti-witch group?

That would certainly help explain her absolute nonchalance in the face of, well… THAT.
How does Red feel about Elder Goddesses?
