BJ, or Boyd Johnson, thinks himself the ladies man. He couldn't be more wrong, but that doesn't stop him from trying to woo the fairer sex when he can.
Kazom is a 3,000 year old genie. In order to conserve power and thereby extend his life, Kazom does as little magic as possible. He is bound in the form of the Clark family's cat and mostly just lays around Melvin's Room.
It doesn’t have to be video. It could be he’s just checking out some Facebook chatter of people who went to the party. Of course, with ubiquitous smart phones these days someone probably *did* catch it on video, and you know that would get posted somewhere. Liam surely has more enemies than just Melvin and company.
It’s hard to imagine Liam having any friends, though at least one other kid was at his party.
It’s highly likely what transpired was captured on video…many things are nowadays.
Lot’s of bullying and fighting is done using social media. I know a few teachers and have heard what a problem it’s becoming in the schools.
I wonder what kind of effect this will have on Liam. Teens have reportedly killed themselves over this type of humiliation.
The point of the bubbles is to provide a white background so the black text is readable. If the art behind the bubbles is dark enough that it begins to blend in with the text, the bubbles have too much transparency.
If you want to do text with transparent bubbles (or without bubbles), use dark text with a light border or drop shadow, or light text with a dark border or drop shadow. Look closely at movie subtitles some time and you’ll see what I mean. That’s how you make text readable regardless of what color the background is.
Would it be possible (and I am taking a shot in the dark here) to either make the text bubbles a CSS overlay on the picture so they could be turned off, or alternatively (and probably much simpler) would be to upload two versions of the picture (one with word bubbles, one without), and either have a button to swap them or just link the text less version in the description?
I see that there is a conflict of visions here. You might look up Vaughn Bode, he of Cheech Wizard fame; he was primarily concerned with the graphics. He developed a style that put the speech bubbles outside each squarish graphic frame, like a wordy title block.
Plus, his graphics are astonishing.
On the other hand, he died in an erotic strangulation mishap, so…
Good suggestion, but I have zero creative control now so it’s all what Bach-mann wants. If he wants something like that, fine. If not, well, there is nothing I can do about it.
Wait, or did you mean the whole erotic strangulation…never mind.
I do recommend anyone with interest in graphic story telling look him up, though. By the social standards of his (my) day, he was bleeding edge; now he’d be counted more than a little sexist.
Though, anxious to know what happened with Red, I am interested in seeing the other characters develop.
This post cracked me up! If I must be left hanging, the cleverness and hilarity of this post helped to ease the strain on my hands.
Love the word “nerdantic” as a descriptive….I know a few too many of those. Definitely gonna use that!
Also, the “3-1+1” for the title, gives me the impression that this is what Melvin, Red and BJ have done together, many friday nights.
I will have to chime in that the text issue is a real problem. So much so that it gives me a headache.
Unfortunately it seems the creator is deeply in the throughs of artistic narcissism and has forgotten some of the basics.
I really would like to continue to read the story but will have to step away for a bit till they recover some sanity and not pass on due to Erotic-auto-asphyxiation.
Ahem…Luna-tic, this one’s for you.
You’ve said numerous times on this page that you have no say, though you’ve said an awful lot (emphasis on awful) in the form of a highly unprofessional, passive aggressive, melodramatic, temper tantrum.
I am an artist and writer as well and am fully aware of the amount of time, effort, and thought put into a creative endeavor such as this. SHAME on you for thinking this is the place to battle out your differences. If
you were on my creative team, you wouldn’t be any longer.
You are clearly reading too much into it. I have no feeling on the matter one way or the other, but at the same time I am not going to take the blame for something I didn’t have a say in. You can consider it passive aggressive if you want. I consider it dissemination of information.
When you are part of a team, that means you take the hits as well as the successes as a team. The fact you still have administrative access, and are listed in the about us section, tells me you are still part of this team AND behaving like a poor sport.
I would just like to clear a few things up. First off, with regard to the text bubbles, my apologies to anyone who found them difficult to read, and to the guy with the headache, send me your address. I’ll be happy to send you a big bottle of Ibuprofen, an eel for your bath, or a dead mole, whichever you prefer. My only intention was to create a little more balance between the text and the art, because I feel that they are each very important in this type of storytelling. A number of you have made some helpful suggestions. A couple of which we have already been considering.
Secondly, “Damage Control to Major Tom,” I am not the only writer on this project. Shadow has been working along side since ‘Friendship is Magic’. She was the vision behind ‘Red’s Dawn’, and has been a long time collaborator with me on a number of other projects. Most importantly, she sees the potentials in these characters and is excited to explore them.
Thank you to all of the readers, supporters and constructive criticizers alike. I am listening to your comments and am growing and learning because of them.
I would have preferred to address this a bit differently, but I currently have no administrative access to the site.
Don’t take commenter’s comments too personaly Bach-Mann. There will always be those who have there opinions and allows those who nit pick on everything.
Remember for every comment, there’s a few commenters that enjoyed the comic and for every commenter (good or bad), there’s a bunch of non-commenters who also enjoys the comic but didn’t comment on it.
At least the Grammer-nazis haven’t come after you yet.
As for access to the site, I’ve made an account for you. The info to access it should be in your Jeaniebottle E-mail address.
I’d cue up with Luna or myself before attempting to make any serious changes, as you don’t want to mess up the site.
BACH-MANN, what CD said. I’m personally not having any trouble following the story or reading the text, but I wasn’t going to post just to say that. I did see some good suggestions, and apparently so did you. Try to remember the “silent majority” is out there and supports you, Richard Nixon said so . . . 😉
Gascon the Transgressor wins all the winnable stuff.
Did he give you gold for that endorsement?
He didn’t even wait for me to say anything just gave it to me! And guess what! It all had chocolate inside!
Um, kinda stale, a little, but CHOCOLATE!
I laughed out loud at panel 1 when I realized who Melvin was talking to. This page is hilarious.
And I’m curious how BJ (apparently) got footage of Liam’s thrashing.
More then likely one of the workers got it on their phones.

Dang!
3 or 4 days more to find out how badly Red is injured!
Hopefully merely a sprain.
P.S.:
Please set the dialog box transparency slider to “less” or “much less”.
Thanks!
I wouldn’t have made any of them transparent but that’s what Bach-mann wanted. Can’t really blame him, it’s his art the bubbles cover after all.

Yes, I am aware of that.

So BACH-MANN is doing both the writing and the art? You are the editor?
Wait, or did you mean the whole erotic strangulation…never mind.
I do recommend anyone with interest in graphic story telling look him up, though. By the social standards of his (my) day, he was bleeding edge; now he’d be counted more than a little sexist.
Yes, he is doing both. See my post on the main page for more details.
Ugh. Hard to follow plot compounded by hard to read TEXT? Are you kidding me?

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it, but I really have nothing more to say on the subject then I already have. Have a good night.
