So that’s Red’s mother? Mother of the year she’s not.
Seriously, Ida is showing more concern for Red, Helga too.
Her attitude in this strip doesn’t seem to match up with her character bio. At least she doesn’t seem like a doting mother.
The description is going to be different than what you read. Stay tuned for the updated bio.
Yikes. She seemed so sweet before… I guess it’s just when she’s trying to get what she wants.
It looks like Red’s mother is taking the “upper class” mindset very seriously–act aloof and foist off caring for your kids onto the hired help.
Were the Thorntons nearly as wealthy before Red’s new look became an income source for them? If not, then Mrs. Thornton may be under the corrupting influence of sudden wealth here and acting this way because she has become a social climber.
I think they were already rich going by their connections.
Plus they can afford to send Red to an all girls private school, so they weren’t poor before.
I wonder if Red’s mom is a former model. Previous connections might explain how Red started modeling so quickly. That response by Ida to the mothers’ “What are you doing” question might mean that Red’s mother should have been the one mentoring Red.
I think she meant being a parent by her response.
Red mother being a former model would be an interesting twist to the story too. It could have also been the way that she met her husbon and how they originally made connection with each other and little bit how they got there money. It obvious that there fairly well to do and have some money to there name. They may not be wealthy people like Liam parents are, but they have some wealth.
Liebste Helga,
hören Sie nicht Frau Thornton. Als Kindermädchen liegt Ihre erste Pflicht darin dafür zu sorgen das es ihrem Schützling Tiffany gut geht.
In Liebe

Heh yay for German accents and language! Also the new page makes me wonder how rich Reds family is actualy is and how they made their money.
Looks like Red’s mother may have to fill in for her at the Warhammer gigs 🙂
Going by the glass of wine, i’m guessing Red’s mother is rarely sober.
That looks like a martini to me. In the first frame you can see it has 2 olives in it.
TWO olives? Decadent. 😛
I would agree. Perhaps the mother is a two faced drunk.
New characters…new, at least, to this continuity. I remember Red’s mother from before, but Helga?
On the other hand…I can’t remember if Red had another name besides “Red.” If it’s a nickname because of the hair color, well…I can tell you from personal experience that I hated it.
Red picked it herself and demands to be called Red.
Red’s “official” female name is Tiffany, her birth name, from back before the mess with Jeanie, was Clarence. Why the family ddn’t go with Claire can only be explained by the “Law of Funny.”
Once, during the Clinton Administration, I had a “run-in” with Chelsie Clinton & her entourage of Secret Service types at a sandwich shop near Stanford. One of the employees told me that the huge blonde Swedish guard was named Hell-Ga. Accent on the ll-s. I remember that she gave him a milk curdling stare and then continued to focus on her charge, as wel as any potential threats in the area.
No Red! Don’t take the blue pill!
Red pill, or blue pill?
Why oh why didn’t I take the BLUE pill?…
How about take her to the ER for some xrays, crutche, a splint. Or at least give her an ACE bandage and some ice.
Well, Helga is putting a pillow under it to get it elevated, which is a very important step in getting the swelling down. So it does look like she knows what she’s doing. She’ll probably wait a bit then check it after the pain pill has taken effect to see what it needs.
I can’t imagine the effects of V..” The little blue pill” would have on a female teen.
Birth control. Not the other one.
Oh, there’s more blue pills out there than just THAT one. Aleve for example is blue. However noting that she just called it “The Blue Pill” means it’s probably prescription only. If it’s anything stronger than Vicoden, she’s getting nominated for worst parent of the year.
I love how easy going Red’s parents and Helga are. “You magically turned into a girl? Pf, oke! We’ll just send you to a modelling school!”.
Sigh. Only in comics.
I’d call Red’s mother is a lot of things, but easy going isn’t one of them.
Red’s mother is a lot of things, but easygoing isn’t one of them.
Odds are she’s just happy to have a beautiful daughter now to carry on her modeling lineage over a nerdy son who spent all his time playing games. She probably didn’t even question the how of it.
That doesn’t justify being an uncaring mother though.
That and the feeling that She is being remade into another image of person that she did not want to become in the first place. She being forced into modeling and into becoming hot female model. Which will go a long way to crushing his image of being a guy and to adopt a new image of him/her being a girl. Remember he only been a girl for about two weeks now.
I’m sure there’s a tv trope for it, but a subset of ‘rule of funny’ is that the characters are unable
to know what the readers know, or make what to us would be reasonable conclusions.
Somehow related the the magic of ‘glamor’ where people see what they expect to see?
So when their son became female they accepted it. Oh… Maybe like when Time Travelers change
the past. “What are you talking about? Everyone knows Germany lost WW2.”
is there a reason Mom looks like a Femme Fatale from a detective novel?
I would love to answer that Norm, but I’m late for my trenchcoat fitting. ;P
So, Red’s mom and Ida seem to know one another and neither are too fond.
Red’s mom doesn’t even seem focused at all on her well being…just tuck her in and kill it with a pill. Wonder what the effects will be…
I love how Helga ran out there and swooped her up. Some times you just need a little, “there there”. Red seems like she’s feeling a bit better by the final panel, even before the blue pill.
When we first see Reds parents, they both seemed excited by the money making potential of having a sexy daughter. Lets see how this plays out.
