BJ, or Boyd Johnson, thinks himself the ladies man. He couldn't be more wrong, but that doesn't stop him from trying to woo the fairer sex when he can.
Owner of The House Of The Rising Fun. Van is a laid back old stoner who likes to reminisce about the early days of tabletop RPGs. He often tells amazing stories that are hard to believe.
Red was a boy until a new genie tried to get Melvin a girlfriend. That's when the genie turned Red into a girl so Melvin could practice talking to girls, and forgot to turn her back before disappearing. Red is hopeful that her situation is only temporary.
Ouch, look at the blood on the mallet–you can see the blood in the silhouette in the second panel too. That kind of assault would ordinarily get him ejected from the tournament at minimum, possibly banned from the shop for life, and if the guy he beat is feeling vindictive, criminal charges (which his family’s connections might be able to get him out of jail time, but he will be persona non grata).
Battery, not assault. Assault is _threatening_ violence raising the fear of bodily harm in the victim; battery is actually _causing_ bodily harm to the victim. They’re normally charged together — ‘assault and battery’ — but in the case of a sufficiently out-of-the-blue surprise attack, battery might be charged without assault.
Actually, considering the fact that the trophy is shaped like a warmallet, and if it’s solid (which judging by the fact that he just clobbered someone upside the head and it’s not dented), that trophy could be considered a deadly weapon. If so, we’re looking at “Assault with a Deadly Weapon” (there is no battery with a deadly weapon, I looked).
This is, of course, assuming that the poor chap hit actually SURVIVED a point blank hit on the top the head with a hammer-like object, If he dies, either now or later due to this injury, Liam could be looking at Voluntary Manslaughter aka Murder 3.
Regardless, he’s looking at a stint in juvenile hall, if not outright prison. The tournament, I’m pretty sure, is cancelled.
In reality, yes. However, this is a cartoon, and follows the laws of narrative causality, which means that Liam will only have killed/crippled the guy if it serves the purpose of the story for him to have done so. I do however expect that the cops will arrest Liam and his family will have to pull strings to keep him out of Juvenile Hall.
The “Golden Mallet” is probably made of gold-plated brass or aluminum or something. I’d wager it weighs like four to six pounds–light enough for a kid to wave around one-handed easily.
Since it’s already been said I’ll not mention the charges for the assault and ask more..If Red hadn’t hurt her ankle would BJ be playing hero or running for his life?
I call him “cigarette smoking man” and I think he should have his own bio. He appears to be a Navy vet, or at least he always has a cap that says Navy on it. I’m sort of guessing he’s a practical guy who just solves problems without a lot of fuss, so he may have used his own shoelaces.
Liam grab the trophy before the games and Liam is going to hang onto it like some little spoiled brat. It look like Liam is the one that holding the trophy in all four frames. It look like Liam is the one that got hit in the head too, because it look like only Liam has glove on. In the three that have the shadow of the person that holding the trophy, the person is wherein gloves. Also what the guy outline look like it might be the what Liam wherein too in the forth frame too. It look like Liam is the one getting hit in the head. It also look like Liam is pulling someones hair out too.
So he’s disqualified from the tournament, right? This is something that should get him disqualified, not to mention arrested. There’s blood on that trophy.
So who tripped whom? I think it’s BJ who trips, but I’m not sure. And, the boot he trips on looks like Liam’s, but he would not end up on Liam’s back if that were the case . . . hmm.
It looks like BJ trips over Red’s ankle boot when she turns to the side; her right ankle would have been sticking out. I wonder if he was even trying to attack — the fact he yells “horde rush” tells me yes, but it could’ve been in response to him seeing The Van Man and Smoking Guy readying to make their move — they are flanking him in panel 3. He sure does look pleased with himself though.
I went back and checked, and BJ is wearing black shoes, not brown. Off hand, I’d say that Red tripped Liam.
And I have to say that Liam is a prime example why you shouldn’t spoil your kids like his mother did. One day you’ll get the call that your darling baby boy is in jail for assault with a deadly weapon, if not outright manslaughter.
I THINK the shadowed parts are the censored image of what Red and BJ are seeing. Basically, they watched Liam crack someone’s skull with the trophy, and then turn away from them towards someone else, which is where BJ gets angry, goes to rush him, and gets tripped, somehow ending with him landing on Liam just the right way to knock him down and get him in a hold.
My God ! This is such a classic layout I am surprised no one is getting it. Red and BJ are always facing the action. Those are shadows of that action behind them to imply the graphic violence they are seeing. Panel two is Red going into girly mode being threatened by Liam who is pointing at her, as to say,” you are next!” The same panel BJ is leaping into a ” I will protect you” mode. After being tripped he ends up tackling Liam and then realized that he saved the day. All the old classic movies made great use of shadow. Very good job Bach-Mann!!!
Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Problem is Liam is clearly holding the hammer in his right hand in final frame. That means in the shadows we see, he is facing *away* from Red and BJ. Which is what made Red’s face protecting move really puzzling.
But your explanation makes a lot more sense. I’ll chalk it up to artistic error in drawing the hammer in the wrong hand in the shadows.
She might just be shielding her eyes, or perhaps protecting against blood flung off the trophy. Liam doesn’t seem to be exactly careful with his movements here, and it WAS dripping.
I just had an idea for an interesting direction this comic could go in. Imagine what would happen if Liam got his own Genie? A nutball like him getting that sort of power could turn him into a really threatening antagonist.
If you read genie bottle, Hitler was able to start WW2 in that universe due to having a genie on his side, so even with the limits I think Liam could cause some real havoc if he got his hands on that.
As far as we have been told genies in the IDOAJB universe have the same type of restrictions that bind genies in Disney’s Aladdin. No killing by the genie’s own action, no bringing anybody back from death, and no overt mind control. A genie can however empower mortals to kill other mortals, such as by supplying weapons or not-directly-murderous destructive magic, and can provide all sorts of material resources and information.
Well, as many have said, in the real world this would certainly involve the police and serious charges. What it means in the comic remains to be seen, but I think it’s safe to say Liam will not be winning the tournament this year.
Wholly Carp Bats Man!
Did he just open some poor gamers head?
Not cool, not cool indeed. Who did Liam bash with the trophy?
This is a significant criminal act, although I expect Liam will be adjudicated insane. I kinda feel sorry for him, he was plainly disturbed.
“Affluenza”, I bet.

Vindictive? The guy would have every right to press charges, it’s not about being vindictive.
Vindictive my ass! If what we’re seeing is what I think we’re seeing, that’s cut-and-dry assault, which I’m pretty sure is a straight up felony.
Battery, not assault. Assault is _threatening_ violence raising the fear of bodily harm in the victim; battery is actually _causing_ bodily harm to the victim. Either way ijuinkun, pressing charges wouldn’t be “vindictive”.

Also I wanna know who the guy with the cigerrete is and how he got shoe laces to tie Liam’s arm like he did..

well…this story just got dark.

Wait how did BJ get on top of Liam, it looked like Liam was coming up behind him in panel 3 but in panel 4 he’s on top of him. How’d he do that?
I THINK the shadowed parts are the censored image of what Red and BJ are seeing. Basically, they watched Liam crack someone’s skull with the trophy, and then turn away from them towards someone else, which is where BJ gets angry, goes to rush him, and gets tripped, somehow ending with him landing on Liam just the right way to knock him down and get him in a hold.
JESUS-H-SH*T!

It’s not “girly mode”, the hell dod you mean by that?
And BJ got Liam from behind, so i don’t think Red was the one Liam was threatening. You also seem to be forgetting that Red is currently injured.
It looks like Red accidentally tripped BJ who then fell on top of Liam as he was in the process of
being subdued by Beard Guy and Cigerrete Man.
I just had an idea for an interesting direction this comic could go in. Imagine what would happen if Liam got his own Genie? A nutball like him getting that sort of power could turn him into a really threatening antagonist.
Not really. Genies seem to have limits here.
If you read genie bottle, Hitler was able to start WW2 in that universe due to having a genie on his side, so even with the limits I think Liam could cause some real havoc if he got his hands on that.

Which means there no Dijinn in this universe like the ones in the original myths.
Well, as many have said, in the real world this would certainly involve the police and serious charges. What it means in the comic remains to be seen, but I think it’s safe to say Liam will not be winning the tournament this year.
Liam’s mom looks to have enough money to make a problem like this go away, even in the real world.
Well George W Bush got himself into all sorts of trouble on the same level of this when he was younger and he got to be president.
Ehh…it’ll end up “not guilty by reason of insanity” and Liam will end up going to some over priced headshrinker for the next year or so…
