Red has resorted to editing the clothes her mother bought so that she has clothes to wear. No need to borrow Melvin’s anymore.
OK, I give up. What is the bed-post thing throwing the spy-vs-spy shadow?
===
“Munchkin-douche”, heh heh heh.
===
Yup, never try to console someone by telling them your own troubles. It’s tempting, but I’ve never seen it work.
Plus, in doing so, Melvin let someone in on the secret plan who turns out to not necessarily be an ally.
Well from a guess I’d say it’s a wizard. Maybe Kazom’s shadow, his essences infused into the light?
If it’s not that, maybe a statue of some sort? Like, maybe it’s Melvin’s dad, or something?
AH! WHOOPS! Of course. It’s Melvin’s dad’s magical essences watching them. Duh.
Are there any views of the shop exterior showing any lamp posts or such? I’m not in a place where I can review the archive.
I guess if somebody casts a spell on you it also makes you cast a shadow…
of course Red wont go for that, she may be a tomboy but she is not a lesbian.
Only true for certain limited values of “lesbian”.
Those of us familiar with her history know she was once a boy, and still has a boy’s mind (as far as has been shown). To an outside observer, Red’s a girl attracted to other girls: in practice, a lesbian.
The question is, will Red reject any sexual activity with her female body, à la the Misfiled Ash Upton? I hope not; that ends up neutering the character.
As I said, I don’t think she is a lesbian, and the “oh she is so lesbian” excuse for her not wanting to date Liam is one of the oldest one in the book, the one that all unattractive losers tell themselves when hot girls show no interest in them, because they are ugly, fat and sweety.
I kind of suspect Red and Melvin getting together at some point.
Outside wishforfilling fantasy, guys never end up dating the girl they are stalking
Ash’s issue wasn’t the rejection of sexual activity, it’s a fear of enjoying it too much and losing a sense of him. Plus, his only experience with it was with a girl who took the dominant (i.e. “male”) role. Which freaked him out.
Red’s issue is going to be that the change is too recent. His base instincts are still “male” and thus if a relationship gets serious will be confused/ashamed of having female bodily reactions rather than male ones. If this was a year or so further down the line, this would be lessened by the familiarity with the body, but at the same time the longer Clarence remains Tiffany, the harder the reverse transition would be. (Having to re-rewrite instincts.)
I don’t want derail this by talking about another comic, but briefly:
Regardless of Ash’s motive, the effect is that she stayed as far away from sex as she could, for as long as she could. And in my mind, this neutered her, and the comic.
Misfile is now a story about a tomboy racer who occasionally experiments (off-screen) with lesbianism. The fact that Ash was once male is almost irrelevant, outside the angel sideshow. Very little of the story has to do with sex roles at all.
Misfile is one of several male to female magical sex reassignment stories that made a few boob and lingerie jokes, and then got sidetracked. Misfile, I Dream of a Jeanie Bottle, Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki, and Exiern come to mind.
The animated short “Geraldine” made a good stab at it, but chickened out at the very end.
You’re likely right about Red; it’s just too early for her to have adjusted. (Although I wish we’d seen more of her model training and girls school experience.)
I very much want to see the comic about the stereotypical football quarterback who wakes up female, and has to cope with the biologically driven emotional changes, as well as the social role, much of which dismays her. (She’s completely disgusted that she WANTS to be a cheerleader, and that she finds herself preening around the new quarterback.)
Red’s model training and girlschool experiences are still very much in full swing and will be featured again in the next arc.
From my perspective, it makes sense that she has not completely transitioned. She was so recently male and identified as such her entire life. Currently, her perspective is more in-line with an intersex person who was born into the physical form of a female, but has always identified as male. Lesbians are women who prefer other women, not necessarily, women who’ve always felt they were in the wrong body. Though, some of the outward behavior would appear similar, it’s an important distiction to make here.
With that being said, we fully intend to delve deep into the gender aspects AND sexuality of the main characters. It’s a huge part of a teen’s development and a huge part of who we ultimately become.
@Shhadow:
[steeples fingers]
Eeexcellent.
Red’s had quite a shock, and it makes sense that it will take her some time to adjust, even that she might not ever go full girly. After all, she’ll always know, without doubt or question, that she’s supposed to be a boy, and what it feels like to be a boy. Even if she marries and has children, she’s going to watch the father of her child being a Dad, and think, “That was supposed to be me.”
What would be even more interesting would be to have that Munchkin-Douche chasing Red too. That would really make Red day, having both Saatchi and Munchkin-Douche bag chasing her.
It’s the emotional conflict that would make things entertaining.
Red’s boy-brain might be attracted to Saatchi, because Saatchi’s pretty cute, but Liam? Yuck-o.
Under no circumstances can I see Red feeling anything but revulsion for Liam.
Yes, Red would have revulsion for Liam chasing her, but, it doesn’t mean that Liam wouldn’t want to chase her anyway whether she like it or not. Liam is a rich brat that thinks he can get he wants and Red is a very cut modal too and might even be considered a prize to capture by some men. There were indication further back in the story chain where it look like Liam might have had some interest in her and might have been trying to get her. I can see the modeling agency that Red work for doing business with department clothing store chain that his mother owns.
Beside Red want to save The House of Fun and she thinks that Liam had anything to do with shutting down the house of fun, she may have to use her girly charm to save The House of Fun. Beside the author of this comic strip hasn’t done anything with the fact the Red a model for taking picture teenage girls cloth yet either.
It just an idea and there would be adversarial relationship here between Liam and Red, Melvin and BJ. Liam would make a good bad coming in every so often, but, not too often, because it would get old after awhile.
I admit, I hope Liam isn’t much involved; your scenario would creep me out a little.
If Red does acquire a male interest, I want it to be someone she can like, even respect. Someone she’d naturally be attracted to if she really were a girl.
Rohypnol
Given Liam’s attitude he probably see’s nothing wrong with using it and has the money to easily get it. But no doubt Red would somehow turn the tables on him.
Red used to be a dude and made it very clear she was attracted to her agent. So she’s clearly into women, the question is if she’s lesbian or bi.
What’s your problem with lesbians anyway?
I’m not the one you directed this to, but my problem with lesbians in these kinds of stories is that they’re boring. It’s the easy way out for the writer.
What I want to see is the shift from a male to a female perspective. Letting the new girl be a lesbian doesn’t challenge her enough.
“Letting the new girl be a lesbian doesn’t challenge her enough.”
I should add, “but it’s a reasonable first step in the transition.”
Speaking of Red, BACH-MANN, that last frame of her is delicious.
Please don’t let her cut her hair; it’s short enough as it is.
On the question of whodunit: I clicked on the “House of the Rising Fun” tag, and got Scar Face.
(But I’m sure there were earlier strips showing House exteriors. Were they not retroactively tagged?)
The actual first appearance of “the house” facade is in ‘Girls Suck’. I’ll try to get that adjusted soon. 😉
Now we know why BJ upset, he been shot down in his idea of being man gift to women kind and now the house of fun is closed too. For the time being Melvin is safe from telling Red about Saatchi desire to have Red for her girl friend, which is what BJ was referring to when he left. Red is currently mad about the house of fun closing and hasn’t got all the details. Which is going to be interesting when she does.
I see a major fight between three long term friends, before everything settle out into the new reality.
I’m not sure that telling Red about Saatchi outright was the plan. The plan is more likely to involve getting Red and Saatchi together in romantic circumstances.
Same-same for getting Melvin and Holly together.
No, Red’s shadow ain’t from Spy vs. Spy; their hats don’t have pointed crowns. Red’s shadow has a witch’s hat.
Ha! You are right. And they had really wide brims.
But the spies themselves had long pointed noses. No wonder I was confused.
Well, I’m right about the shadow, but it’s not Red’s. It is kind of funny that Red has no shadow in the fourth panel, the first she appears in…
Well, she is standing away from the wall a bit, but then the giant mushroom shadow is casting nicely even though the source is no way visible.
I’ll call this artist error and forget it.
… Whoa. A believable reaction there. I actually honestly thought it was going to go the sappy happy ending way. He actually said everything I was thinking he should say. Awesome. Hmm… I have no idea where this will go and that is very cool.
Change happens… Just not to everyone. It’s sad when friends change and you are stuck as… Well… As what they once were?
Anyway kudos on the character. He’s a good spice in the comic.
I appreciate the compliment, thank you!
If Red becomes a witch then we’ll know the shadow on the wall was a FORE shadow. *badum-pshh* 😀
