Red’s First Steps: Page 11

Well, Red’s brain seems to have just crashed from sheer bafflement! But I think there might actually be a virus running on Henry’s OS right now.

Well, Red’s brain seems to have just crashed from sheer bafflement! But I think there might actually be a virus running on Henry’s OS right now.
What madness is this?
It seems like Henry’s way of coping with the change is to go all-in on his new daughter.
Well when Red said Dear Father it was in pink like Jeanies poofs.
Given this is just after the change there could be some residual genie magic at work
well, Melvin’s magic AND Jeannie’s magic were responsible for this, so it might be possible.
Well, we know that Mary is OK with Clarence being turned into a girl and we know that she knows about magic and everything that goes with it. Besides, she got the daughter that she wanted and get a second chance at the Northheil girl school for witches in crowd that she missed the first time around. But, who said that Henry knew about magic being past the story book witches and genies stuff. It look like got hit blind sighted with something that he didn’t know could happen and now he is being pulled along by Mary through this process. It look like he is still trying to wrap his mind around his step son being transformed into his step daughter and he still struggling with it. But, it look like he trying to cool about it and make the best of the situation that he is currently in and he may even be taking advantage of the situation too. But, with everything that we have heard on the phone a few minutes ago, would indicate that he is trying to get up to speed as to what going on now.
We’ve been given multiple hints that other characters believe Red’s transformation unlocked some serious magical potential that Red either could not realize as Clarence or is somehow amplified as Tiffany. We also know that Red is well aware of his stepfather’s disapproval and fears rejection. So it shouldn’t be too surprising that Red’s first bit of real magic (intentional or not) is a subconscious plea for Henry’s approval, which Red gets, albeit in a way Red is not comfortable with. Embarrassing yes, but hopefully healthier than Henry’s continued disapproval. This will give Red an incentive to learn more magic if only to get Henry to tone it down a bit, It may also serve as proof by exception of Mary’s magical abilities because she has so far appeared immune.
Red casts “Charm Person”.
*Rolls a natural 20.*
Critical Success!
@ Pilgrim: Throughout the story there’s been no indication (that I’ve seen… could be wrong) that Red has any idea she might possess magical abilities which would give her an incentive to learn more. If this was Red’s spell, it was totally subconscious and a reaction to Henry’s disapproval, but it could equally be a residual effect of Jeanie’s magic. Remember, this is mere days after her transformation.
@ mike, Clarence prior to being transformed into a girl way just a Geek and there was absolutely no indication that he knew anything about magic or the family linage in witchcraft through Mary his mother or that she even shared it with him. He was basically a disappointment to her and most of her friends didn’t know that she had a son even, because, she kept it a secret. She took care of his physical needs, but, that was just about it and most of the duties of being his mother was basically off loaded to Helga there maid. As far as sending him to an all girl school high school, well that wasn’t going to happen, the school the Mary went to and maybe even her mother went to also.
But, once Clarence is transformed into a girl, all that changes.
1. She can now go to the school for girl school called Northheil.
2. We find out that Red or Tiffany has a strong family history in witchcraft too, but, it was only dormit, but, it is definitely there.
3. That Red now being a girl, that her witchcraft has either or both been re activated and unlocked or revealed to Tiffany now.
4. Red or Tiffany which is her stage name is now modal for female teen clothing, video modal and doing commercial on TV, because, she is photogenic. Because, she photogenic, the witches want to recruit her into there group too.
5. She is also Melvin friend and if they get Tiffany, they may use her to get Melvin and or try to merry Tiffany off to Melvin to get Melvin too.
6. Then with both Jeanie and Melvin using both of there magic on Clarence, that could also helped to jump-start Red or Tiffany magic capabilities also. If it wasn’t there, it probably there now, but, was probably added onto what was already there even if it was unknown to Clarence before he was transformed into Tiffany and it is definitely known to him now or should I say she.
But, yes, prior to this, Red had absolutely no idea that she had any kind of witches power before this time, but, lack of knowledge of having it, doesn’t mean that she did have it all along, it just means that she is ignorant of that witches power she posses.
Red had (and I believe still has) no idea about their own magical potential. Which is why I assumed this particular bit of magic was unintentional and guided by Red’s subconscious need for love and approval from his stepfather. But if you go back and read the comic carefully, particularly the debates and arguments, you will find hints that there are those amongst the various factions jockeying for control of the heir of Azure who see Red as a possible magical asset to be used as a counterpoint, counterweight, counterpart or even a potential mate for Melvin.
Unfortunately for Red, who still sees himself as Clarence, this particular bit of unintended magic backfired in that Red received his stepfather’s love as a girl when what he really wants is Henry’s help in getting the transformation reversed.
That is Jennies magical color. I think we can go with this being a bit of the become a girl poof magic at work. Given we have seen the magic surrounds Red like a cloak. Not having a magical background may have left Stepdad without any way to resist the changes, unlike the mother.
Hollow Earth is even stupider 🙂
That isn’t what Doug Mclure and Peter Cushing say.
Also, Bigfoot is completely real. And we all thank Bob Chandler for that.
Hold a quarter up and look at the face. This is the picture of earth that NASA shows you from space. Now turn the quarter sideways. This is the picture they will not show you from space. Ref: the Flat Earth Society. Extra deep oil drills have actually broken through to the hollow Earth. Ref: Superman and the mole people.
Yeah … Hollow Earth is nowhere near as stupid as Flat Earth. Greeks already realized the Earth is round two thousand years ago. Actually, June, ca. 240 B.C. Eratosthenes measured the circumference of Earth – and might even been exactly right, depending on how long “stadium” was.
The Egyptian knew the Earth was round too and they even knew roughly how big around it was too, to within a 50 mile error in knowing just how big around the Earth was. There was a water well in southern Egypt that the sun was directly over head on one day of the year at noon time. There was no shadow on the water well in far south of Egypt, then they had someone in Northern Egypt in Alexandria about 70 or so mile measuring another water well there or stick and then measured shadow at the same time that there wasn’t a shadow on the well in the south. Using the 70 and measured angle and using a right triangle, you can figure out the radius of the world. Once you know the radius of the globe, the it the Radius into an equation of Pi R squared to get the circumferences of a circle.
What’s super amusing is the flat earthers hold conferences all around the world. And have even issued press releases claiming their beliefs are spreading around the world. And then there was the genius who built the rocket that was supposed to take him high enough to prove the world was flat but only served to demonstrate why they use the word terminal to describe terminal velocity.
There is a 747 pilot, a very real one, who has offered to fly them over where they say the edge is and NONE of the flat earthers have taken him up on that offer.

The standard paranoid answer that they give to airplane/ship offers is that the Governments force pilots and ship navigators to become part of the Conspiracy as a precondition of being licensed, therefore the Flat Earthers can only trust their own people to navigate according to the “real” Flat Earth model.
I just have to ask.. whose head do i have to whack harder with a mallet?
Error your Henry Thornton has stopped working to restart whack with a mallet for system reboot
Jokes aside I’m actually curious how many people actually work on this webcomic
Just two. Hollum Dusk/Carlos writes and draws, and I copy edit and post the pages (when I’m not on vacation).
In the last panel, Tiffany or Red has Brown hair instead of Red hair. Henry in the first, forth, seventh and eighth panels. Tiffany or Red in second, third, fifth and sixth panel. In the ninth panel, it either Tiffany with Brown hair or Henry that look like Tiffany in her school uniform with Henry brown hair.
I think that the last panel, like the third panel, is meant to convey a different lighting scheme.
When thing start to get dark, the first thing to go is the color and everything turns to shades of gray before everything goes completely black where you can’t see anything at all. That explains the third panel totally.
In the ninth panel Tiffany skin tone is a little bit paler that is true, but, the hair color has changed way too much to account for that amount of color change. The only other possibility that I can come up with is that we are seeing Tiffany from Henry point of view and it might be a little bit shaded too.
“Color failure” is a common shorthand used to denote a shocking surprise. The colors are either desaturated or shift entirely to black and white to represent the focal character going pale with shock, which is difficult to depict otherwise. Note Red’s nonplussed expression in the same panel. The desaturated colors are not intended to be taken literally, they are intended to convey the depth of Red’s surprise at Henry’s response, which judging from the prior comics is probably the last thing Red expected. The color failure serves as a figurative way of demonstrating just how much Henry’s effusive gushing over his new “princess” has rocked Red’s entire worldview.
This comic contains another good example of color manipulation used as a story technique in panel 3, where Red’s shift to grayscale and accompanying costume change is used to represented Henry recalling the first time he saw Red after his transformation,
So this is a common symbolic technique. It’s probably not intended to be interpreted as a literal change in lighting or perception.
What seems to be gong on in the last panel is that the color has been desaturated. And that kind of change has a much stronger effect on really saturated colors, like Red’s red hair, than on less saturated colors like her skin.
“What even is reality now”
Henry, we’ve all been asking that for the last year.
I just got this idea that when Mary was a teenager in the Northheil girl school, she did something that got her thrown out of the inner witches circle. We already know that part of this thing, but, they haven’t gone over exactly what she did or how far into this group that she actually got before they threw her out of the group or the level of power that she was able to achieve before they put they put her out of the witches inner circle. We know that Mary got pregnant with Clarence sometime during this period, but, we don’t know who the biological father is or what level of a witch he was at either, because, that would also make a really difference too, to there response to Mary and her pregnancy also if he was of one of the other witches groups that are out there. They could have locked Mary witches power up and/or locked up the baby witches power up too and/or changed his or her gender before birth too.
None of this has been dealt with yet and can twist and change the outcome or which way this story unfold also. There are too many unknown here that we don’t know yet.
I thought the schools name was South-
something.
Yes, it is Southeil
Is Mary aware of Melvin’s status as the heir of Azure, or how the Covens are fighting over him (and the book) like dogs over a juicy steak?
Because I don’t believe her above pressing Red to become the next “Mrs Clark”.
It hasn’t been revealed to us yet if Mary is aware of Melvin being heir apparent of the Azure after Thomas Clark his father died or apparently has has died and that may be revised to something less than him dying, which is still unknown for certain right now. But, she most certainly did know that her son best two friend are Melvin and BJ. She probably knew a little bit about Thomas Clark, because, she use to run with the witches the would have know about Thomas Clark also, so Mary may have figured it out on her own, but, being on the outside of everything that going on, she wasn’t a major player until her son turned into a girl and now all bets of off as to what Mary’s going to do now.
As you said, I would not put it past Mary to try and get Tiffany married off to Melvin too, to serve her own desires too.
I understand what Carlos is going through with internet problems, and i hope he’ll get it fixed soon.
