Red’s First Steps: Page 24
And so concludes this portion of Red’s First Steps. There will be more later… but this felt like a suitably ominous note to end on, don’t you think?
Apologies for the delay this week. Life got in the way for both Hollum and Robert. Hopefully things will be back on track for next week’s page.
Panel 7: we’ll send the message that NOBODY messes with the THORNTONS!
That line is fine. He’s implying the “I’ll” in “I’ll send the message”. Or the “that will” in “That will send the message”.
I thought about that line for a long time. But Ultimately decided to leave it as Hollum originally wrote it.
Poor Red, Everyone is getting what they want but them.
Well, I would say Melvin’s life is about to get even more interesting courtesy of the Covens.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if a certain Fae Succubus manages to come back to stalk him.
Poor Red the hope of going back to normality grows ever distant.
Overall I enjoyed this arc Henry’s become one of my favorite side characters
Same! He’s layered and nuanced. And… a bit malicious. 🙂
It look like Tiffany is here to stay, but, then we already knew that. Beside, Jeanie genie magic that turned Clarence into Tiffany, there seem to be a whole lot of other kinds of magic that has already or will be used on Tiffany to, to finish this transformation into a girl. Then there the girl finishing school and tutoring to being a lady. By the time they finish with Clarence, he will be a she and 100% Tiffany. That what it look like is going to happen here.
Plus if Tiffany turn back into Clarence, the webcomic loses its poster girl
Also a stupid theory I’ve had for a while is just, the essence of Clarence and Tiffany get split into their own separate beings. because magic
I can imagine Tiffany actually falling for Melvin, given the later being dedicated to help him/her. Girls love positive attention.
That, plus Melvin is/was Clarence’s best friend, and being good friends is the best way for people to fall in love without being aware of it. Let’s hope that Melvin doesn’t jump to the conclusion that his friend is being mind-controlled into falling for him.
It’s not just girls who love positive attention.
Panel 6: …you did OVERHEAR that…
Panel 7 grammar police: it should be “WHOMEVER” (objective) rather than “WHOEVER” (nominative case). But that error is really common, to the point that you could reasonably state that Henry wouldn’t have used the correct form. 🙂
(Quick way to help tell which is correct… replace the word/phrase with “he/him” and the right case will usually (for English speakers) be obvious. And just remember that “hiM” and “whoM(ever)” are the same case.)
Thanks for the tip on “whom”. I almost never see or hear anyone use that word at all, so the grammar of it doesn’t come naturally.
And DANGIT. I checked that line really closely. Re-read it multiple times. And totally missed the “d” in “overheard” every single time. Grrrrr.
But meanwhile, Melvin is going to seek that magic device that Kazom used to free Jeanie from the Blue Jinn – and probably mess up Tiffany for good.
Ah – it is the Quat Euzma …
Didn’t Jeanie break it on the Blue Djinn’s head? Obviously Melvin couldn’t have found it or Kazom wouldn’t have been able to give it to Jeanie, and once smashed he won’t be able to. (IDOAJB #557-559, 562-564)
Kazom said that a none magic being can handle the Quat Euzma safely only and Magic being like him can’t use it safely, he means Genie. I have one question, does it also include witches too, if it does, then that would also exclude Melvin from being able to safely use the Quat Euzma too. There are special condition under which you can use the Quat Euzma and it can only be use for certain things, like against another magic being. If Melvin were to get his hands on a Quat Euzma and used it on Tiffany, just what kind of effect would it have on her and would it improve the situation or make it worse? We don’t know.
Larry: my understanding is that Witches in this world are humans with magic, and if their magic is removed, they become the same as non-magical humans. In contrast, Genies are inherently magical—it is a part of their very being that they can not live without.

Okay, so
To recap
Clarence’s mom is nucking futs
And his ‘father’ is HORRIFYING
Anything else we need to know??? XD
The actual dad went willingly MIA, leaving Mary as a single, teen mother, and their Grandpfather on the mother side cut any ties with them as soon as he found out the news, even though he seemingly had more than enough resources to take care of them at the time. Also, Henry won’t allow them have a dog.
Too bad. Red could really use a dog right about now.
Poor Clarence fate favors Tiffany, I would love to see fan art of them with Tiffany looking a full mirror seeing Clarence looking back. I think that’s the only way that we will see him after this.
Or in his dreams or should I say her dreams?
This is a Flash back of almost one year ago, by the time we get back to the future where Marvin trying to change Tiffany back into Clarence, it will be pretty much a done deal as to who Red is going to be from now on. Red will probably have a female spirit about her by then, either because of magic and/or just being a girl and being indoctrinated into being one.
looks like Tiffany’s life will be a powerful one.
Only after Tiffany learns to seize and wield the power herself instead of letting people like Mary, Henry, and the Witches manipulate her.
