Red’s First Steps: Page 09
That’s a whole lotta names getting dropped… (Lots of which are just easter eggs, though. Have fun figuring why Henry would be interested on them!)

I understand that most of them are from old TV Land shows, and i understand that Honey is CDRudd’s character and Crowley belongs to this comic. but what i can’t understand is.. why would that bozo wanna run a background check on his child’s grandpa?
There are hints scattered in the comic for why he might be interested in gramps.
Remember that Henry married into a family that has some witches blood in them, that why Mary went to Northheil all girls witches school and she now has Tiffany there too and grandmother probably also went to that school also. So doing a linage of both Mary and Tiffany would also be in order to find out what going on and why Clarence turned into Tiffany. Evidently Henry want to know and for what purpose we still don’t know. Clarence turning into Tiffany seem to be very high on Henry priority list.
“Rose Tyler”
Are we going to have a Doctor Who cross over 🙂
Also Jules Brown, son of Emmet L. Brown.
Uh-oh. What happened to Verne Brown?
And several mentions of time travelers at the same time that a Big Ball of Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey Stuff is going down over at IDOAJB…
And is Miranda related in any way to James? How does Lenore relate to Gomez? Or Elizabeth to Marilyn?
Perhaps Henry or his agent will find out for us…
Miranda West is also the name of Anne’s predecessor in the role of The Wotch. http://www.thewotch.com
Looking it up, it appears that Lenore doesn’t have any (canon) relation to the more well-known Addams (Gomez, Morticia, etc.). She’s a vampire from a “Mysterious Adventures” comic book, in which she spends the majority of it as an apparent bystander to a series of murders, which turns out in the end to be her secretly enacting vengeance upon the people that caused a fire that burned down her family home, which killed the rest of her family.
That said, the name *could* just be coincidence, and Lenore actually is the next generation of our favourite creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky family of malcontents and ne’er-do-wells.
Nice bit of fun with the names! 🙂
Well, one of those names is Rita who is a teenager in Jeanie Bottle and who Jeanie currently messing with in Cincinnati six or seven years ago. We know about the female sea captain who run a fishing boat and has a daughter too. It would seem that Henry knows about Genie’s and is on the trail of trying to find our favorite Genie Jeanie too. It been almost a year now that Clarence has been turned into Tiffany. The fact that Henry almost blurted out Clarence before catching himself and saying Tiffany is a tip off to something. Does, Henry intend to find Jeanie to get her to change Tiffany back into Clarence. That would be about the only reason that Henry is looking for Jeanie. If that so, then Henry trying to help Clarence or Tiffany. We already know that Mary doesn’t want Tiffany being turned into Clarence again. Henry not like Helga and Mary can’t intimidate Henry that way she can intimidate Helga.
If that the case, this could turn into a battle between Henry and Mary with Helga supporting Henry in this battle. We also know that Henry will also take advantage of this situation too and has in the past year. Henry got Tiffany several jobs as a model for female cloth for teenager in cloth magazine and as a model for video games too. It could still argued that Henry was trying to make the best of a bad situation for Clarence or Tiffany. Henry could still kind of be an OK guy, but, we can’t say that about Mary.
You don’t think greed has anything to do with it? That’s certainly another reason to be hunting down a genie.
I can see a struggle between Mary and Henry forming here, with each of them trying to mould Tiffany/Clarence into their own heir.
Ah! Good catch, @ijuinkun. I’d been considering a Mr. James West of the U.S. Secret Service from circa 1869-1877, or possibly a more recent person of the same name, a Non-Gender-Specific-Person-In-Black with two children who studied at a dojo in Faerie…
Ooops, wrong block of messages. ^_^
No! Not Miranda West! She’s evil… Evil!
She’s not! Sure, she should communicate with Anne Onymous better, but I believe her she means it well.
She left Milo a shadow of her former self and ensured she was utterly alone for the rest of her life. If that’s not bad enough she made sure Milo would be hated by the only ones he dared trust enough to reveal the secrets to, and took away all the friends she used to have. What that witch pulled was seriously depraved and to really twist the knife… she didn’t have to do any of it. She just wanted to send a message. I dont know if it’s been a decade now but thats not something I can honestly forget. Because Milo is not… important to the main story she was left behind. hated, alone, unable to speak a word which might hurt someone as much as she has been hurt. The only ones who can see her situation is literally the reader.
Oh also- phew. Thanks. I needed to get that off my chest. Been holding it in since the wotch went on hiatus 🙂 Miranda made me hate the so called ‘good’ guys. After all that stuff I wanted them to lose. There’s no point in them ‘saving the world’, given they willfully destroyed one man’s world and it’s not even on their radar. It makes no difference. There’s no justice that can touch Miranda. While I know its just a name drop, it’s one character they really can’t go near. She’s more evil then Skelitor and Ming the Merciless combined. :s
When was the Milos thing, I have forgotten so much about that comic.
@Doug So, I actually have a chat about this debate in private, and opinions aside, I think @Guardingdark had a mix up with the characters of Ivan and Milo. Milo being the shopkeeper inmune to magic, and Ivan the reporter kid who dig to deep into Miranda’s secrets, and got a spreading, reality warping TG curse because of it.
Yeah my mistake *blush* It has been so long. I was thinking of Ivan in that. I think… she’s actually one of the truely good. I had a quick re-read. It seems she could have got back to normal but for whatever reason.. decided to accept the continuation of her curse, on the vague promise that things will turn out ‘better’ for others, as long as she continues suffering. Harsh.
Rita Blackwood? Any relationship to the current story line in IDOAGB?
Remember what happened there in the current IDOAGB story line happened 6 or 7 years ago, in Cincinnati where she pop in and then pop back out again, so it old history. He would never figure out that Jean is the future Jeanie. The sea captain was last year over in Greece, she pop in and pop back out again with no traces to where she went. He may find out where she was both times, but, not know where she is right now.
OK, that reasonable and an honest mistake.
Henry also mentioned a Greek Sea Captain. Is this the same Greek Sea Captain that Jeanie turned into a female after she made him the Captain and the little girl that was one of the other crew man that tried to throw the bottle or totem over board after Jeanie did her number on the Captain. Did I get this one right?
We know that Henry at least knows about Jeanie, because of what she did to Clarence and turning him into a girl. Clarence would have been very forthcoming about telling him about female genie that turned him into a girl. Hearing what Henry said and the names that were mentioned, can we assume that Henry is at least looking for Jeanie or at least mindful that she out there and is kind of cautiously trying to come up along side of her.
No relation between the Ritas. For the most part in this page, the last name it’s what should be of interest, hence the bold. To be honest, I even forgot that Rita was an in use name in JB at the moment. With that said, it’s not the first time this happens, most obvious example being a still not introduce “Jean” who has already been mentioned as part of Southeil Student Council. Still, apologies for the confusion.
Here is a little lore clue, because you should already be wary of the Blackwood name by now. Witches in general can, and will, use multiple names if given the chance.
The name Blackwood made me go to “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina “
Here’s hoping Henry averts the tired old “Abusive Stepdad” and “Evil Stepdad” clichés. I find those very lazy and tiresome. I can envision Henry quietly working on Red’s behalf behind the scenes against his mother’s plans while avoiding an open break. It’s also possible that Red’s magical bloodlines means no simple solution is possible.
That about what I thinking too, about Red magical bloodlines from Mary and further back in the gemological history of there families. That there family rooted into being witches from way back, it might not have been developed, but, that it back there. Then Tiffany being put into an all girl school for girls so they can recruit new girls into this witches fold, which is why Northheil is there for. Then Jeanie turning Clarence into a girl, is what helping to turned it on and invigorated it into high gear and it should become active fairly shortly. With Melvin messing with her also, that will only further cause it to be stimulated.
If Red does develop magic from her mother’s heritage it could interfere with any magic to turn her back. Could end up being like Jennie’s magic turning Jean into a genie without a way back.
I don’t think there’s any danger of Tiffany becoming Clarence again, just like there’s little chance of Jeanie becoming Jean again. It would end the story line.
I would love to see it revealed that Tiffany’s own Witch magic is what’s forcing her to stay female.
Lenore Adams and Elizabeth Munster. I cannot find those two anywhere in the cast of the Adams Family and The Munsters. Although letting the Melvin gang meet the Adams family would be interesting.
If we are going by the conceit that the events of those shows took place when the shows aired (the 1960s), then they are probably the “next generation” of their families, just as Jules Brown should be around 40 years old since he was eight or so in 1985.
Well, when one considers that they had been time travelling with their family at the time, and that most of the vehicle in which they were travelling was made from a circa 1885 vehicle with at least some alternate 2015 tech, it’s hard to pin a date of birth for Jules or Verne, let alone estimate their biological ages at this point in this Fiction.
Maybe, but if we take the “Back to the Future” animated series as a reference, they settled down in the then-present. Anyway, if Henry is interested in Jules, then Jules was definitely old enough to be operating on his own without his parents.
This sounds like it might be a job for Abner the fedora-hatted detective over in El Goonish Shive. He’s already had a case with an elf, a vampire, and and two Immortals.
That is Durwood Stephens, not Derick.
“Durwood” is what Endora called Samantha’s husband(s) in the old series, but his name, whether played by Dick York or Dick Sergeant, was “Darrin”. “Derick” is the husband of Jeanie’s Samantha.
#ThatsTheJoke
Your go-to listening for this comic: Nino Rota’s Godfather theme. Feel free to imagine Henry holding a cat in his lap, and maybe putting on a grey homburg before going out.
I think I know why rose. honey, and Miranda are of intrest to him but why hasn’t he sent for Tedd’s father ?
Edward Verres is in the FBI, and presumably Henry wants to avoid the notice of major governments.
That’s Doctor B.H. Smith to you. Honey should be just completing her second or third Ph.D. around now, depending upon how the timelines line up.
I think that would be Dr. H.B. Smith. B.H. probably is still working on her first dissertation.
the Doctor I’m thinking of is a time traveler who has had many faces and doesn’t know his or her past fully.
So just to be clear this whole webcomic started as a spin off from a (I guess mini arc) from another webcomic except the spin off has a better art style. It went on for a while then went on hiatus because the original creator vanished then someone new came along and decided to pick up the mantle and continue the story. The original creator resurfaced and has given the rough seal of approval to the current writer of this webcomic. That’s quite a history for such an as far as I know obscure webcomic. If I got something wrong in this timeline please correct me
Current writer and artist, reporting. That’s about the timeline of events in short. Technically, CD.Rudd, the author from the original main comic, who approved both the original team, and now myself, to run this comic, did leave open the offer to anyone interested to take over the comic after the original artist went missing for a year, and I indeed took over the offer. Since then, Bachmann the previous artist finally reappeared and confirmed to be doing good, and working in a new comic now, and we all seem to be in good terms by now.
Thanks for the info such a strange situation but I hope things go well
This web comic may be bizarre and sometimes hard to follow but I enjoy it so keep up the good work
When we gonna get to see some cute moments of Melvin and Red
