Red was a boy until a new genie tried to get Melvin a girlfriend. That's when the genie turned Red into a girl so Melvin could practice talking to girls, and forgot to turn her back before disappearing. Red is hopeful that her situation is only temporary.
Ouch… Deborah is going to need some aloe vera for that burn. What make it worse, is that it wasn’t even intended as one. Though I doubt Deborah will realize it.
I agree with He Who Abides here. Red was doing a back handed slap at Deborah here and acting like she didn’t know that is was Deborah that got the parts. It like having a contest and after the contest, the runner up to the one that won the contest getting what the winner didn’t want or didn’t have time to do.
And Deborah got the deodorant commercial as in you stink! Which is what Red inferring about Deborah BO, or body odder, but, without saying it. Well, played Red and then not act like she knew what she way saying too.
I hate to disparage our favorite redhead, but I think you guys might be giving Red a bit too long of a mean streak. I didn’t get the feeling at all that she was being intentionally malicious here.
Have to agree with Robert on this. If it was a deliberate burn there would have been a hint of a catty smile when something like that was said. Instead the look is full thoughtful, as if just recalling. I honestly think Red didn’t realise the connection.
Personally I think the fact that the burn was unintentional just makes it funnier. It shows how she can get under Debroh’s skin without even trying. And I love her all the more for it.
@Robert, Great idea to suggest to Carlo to have Red do this number on Deborah. I would not consider Red having a mean streak at all if it were true she did it intentional, which I hope it will be. Besides, it was Deborah and her IN GROUP that was messing with Red first and it was unprovoked attack Red too. So I would consider this an appropriate counter strike on Deborah by Red without getting into a cat fight with her, which is where this thing was going to go if it were to be developed properly. If we assume this was intentional on Red part, she basically side stepped Deborah and shit that she was going to pull on Red and left Deborah standing there looking like a fool, which is a good place for her too.
@Ran-san We still don’t know if it was intentional or not, because, I have been around some people where you can’t tell which way it was. Beside that catty smile that you seam to think we need to see, it still could go either way in next edition which we don’t have access to yet. Besides not telling us which way it is, generates all kind of comments from the reader like you and me.
@Jacqui, Agreed, the point is the head of the IN GROUP Deborah is playing second fiddle to Tiffany and she about to choke on it too.
@Ben, either way it is, it funny. Or it could be combination of both of them too. Anyway, which ever way it is, Red definitely out classed Deborah all the way down the line on this one and left her in the dust too.
Also I just got the title reference, “When You Assume…” is a reference to the saying “When you assume you make an ass out of you and me.”
Because that IS what happens in the strip. Very clever Carlos. Congrats.
As much as I would like to take credit for that one, the tittle for this page was Robert’s idea, true is that I am barely able to come with a handulf of titles for most of this pages, so Robert has been of huge help coming with some of his own!
Either way, whether it was intentional or unintentional or whether it was Roberts idea to have Red do this. It was well played for Red to act like she doesn’t know what she said. It can still be intentional or unintentional and you should develop this avenue one way or the other. I would prefer that it be as some kind of verbal fencing myself, it would make the story more interesting to have rivalry between these two girl and Deborah in group of girls. Every school has the IN GROUP that everyone envies. But, if you choose to reveal that it was intentional, the best place to do that is when she talking to Marvin and is relating to story to him. But, in the mean time leave everyone in the dark including Robert as to whether it was intentional of unintentional. Keep everyone guessing as to which way it is and have plenty of discussion as to which way it is too.
Is Debby the one who was going to have to wait until she turned 18 to get her boob job?
Apparently Red has never been kissed by anyone. Will we get to see it when it happens? Saachi or maybe even JJ.
Melvin does not have a familiar yet. Maybe he gets to keep the butterfrog?
If that is an intentional burn, Red is a heck of an actress. Look at the eyebrows in the last panel, conveying regret and a bit of worry for the trouble her schedule caused other people. Deb will be convinced it was deliberate but there is nothing she can point at as evidence. 🙂
I really like the idea that Red prefers going to cons in-character over the TV and modelling jobs. That may be a big part of the way Red copes with this. She’s not really a girl, it’s all just cosplay.
Is it a style in school uniforms to leave the blouse tails hanging out from under the vest? Or is that just a relaxing at the end of the day thing?
Wouldn’t it be great if Deb realizes that Red is simply not interested in non-con modeling work, and therefor isn’t a real competitor? Is in fact rather lost, and just wants out of the whole deal? Wouldn’t it be great if they could–and I know this is a stretch, and could possibly cause the sun to explode–that they could be become friends? That Deb could help Red learn what it’s like to be a girl? Not a model, mind, but a girl, if that makes sense. That Red could become a true friend, and not just a sparewheel?
Never mind, I’m just being silly. Probably not enough drama in that.
Depends on HOW they become friends. I like the idea that if Red realizes some of the girls who are sucking up to her are using her, she might chose to sit with Debroah because, “you hate me but at least your honest about it, with the other girls, I don’t know where I stand.” Of course this would probably only come after much tension and Deborah exploding something along the lines of, “why are you trying to be with me, don’t you know I hate you!”
But yeah, at this point with everything out in the open things could GRUDGINGLY move forward. As they could get to know each other. They WOULD become friends but NOT without drama. At least that’s the way I see it.
How does that Idea sound to you?
Speaking of IF they become friends Deborah could help teach Red how to navigate the web of intrigue that she’s found herself in at girls schools (and possibly covens I hope) Red seems to have a natural talent for it going by that unintended diss.
> Is it a style in school uniforms to leave the blouse tails hanging out from under the vest?
Carlos has mentioned in early page comments that he intends to redesign the uniforms, as he’s noticed things, like the blouse tails, which don’t feel appropriate. And he’s got an idea for making the redesign plot-relevant, which I look forward to seeing.
@Ben Kinda, but not really, here is the thing, 50srefugee is right, along side some previous drawings from CD, THIS, was my biggest references for the girls uniform (though I went with purple for the skirt cause it was the original color at JB, and I like purple), what I didn’t realize is that all those reference where outside school, like in a “relaxing at the end of the day” kind of deal, but on the very few instances of Red going to her school, alongside the only other known student at the time, they both had their ties and blouses inside the little black vest, something that not only looks better on this uniforms but also could save me a lot of work (I hate drawing those ties every time!), so please look forward for my plot-relevant excuse to fix this in the future! it may sound silly now, but I think a lot of you lore hunters will enjoy it!
Purple use to be known as one of the royal colors, because, it use to be so hard to get and only King and Queen could afford the price tag to buy the purple dies to die there fabric purple. So when every you saw purple coming out, you knew royalty was coming without some one saying the King or Queen was coming. I don’t know if you want to use that side of the color purple, but, you can.
@Carlos Thanks for the correction. I guess it just felt that way. But I guess if there’s no vest, there’s no vest for them to be outside off. Either way, said uniforms made an obvious impression on me. (Especially the ties) So hopefully understand my confusion)
@50srefugee – in most schools that have sweater vests as part of the uniform, girls roll their blouse bottoms up under the hem of the vests instead of tucking them into their waistbands like a civilized person, and they sometimes let them hang out like that. It’s not so much a trend as it is laziness.
The tie thing, on the other hand . . . I have no idea what’s going on there.
Ouch… Deborah is going to need some aloe vera for that burn. What make it worse, is that it wasn’t even intended as one. Though I doubt Deborah will realize it.
No, I think it was intended, Red just acted like it wasn’t though and did a good job at doing that too. Hey Deborah, don’t mess with Red!
No, her expression shows it was unintended and there’s no way she would know Deborah was her replacement.
It doesn’t even seem like Red realizes Debbie was the replacement.
I honestly think that she knows damn well who got the part, and that Tiff has gotten pretty good at girl-rilla warfare.
I think she’s gotten much too good to quit being a girl.
I agree with He Who Abides here. Red was doing a back handed slap at Deborah here and acting like she didn’t know that is was Deborah that got the parts. It like having a contest and after the contest, the runner up to the one that won the contest getting what the winner didn’t want or didn’t have time to do.

Except Red was going to do the commercial. So the dig would be “rush job” bit and the fact that Debbie wasn’t their first choice.
Not that it’s going to make the burn hurt less.
Personally I think the fact that the burn was unintentional just makes it funnier. It shows how she can get under Debroh’s skin without even trying. And I love her all the more for it.

@Larry: Oh i’m not making any significant plotting suggestions to Carlos. I only provide minor feedback on occasion. This scene is 100% his idea.
Hm. She’s gotten really good at the verbal fencing. I think Red has been taking some ‘snark’ lessons from Ida.
Being good at verbal fencing would imply she’s being intentionally catty and she doesn’t seem to be.
Hard to say. I think you could read it either way. Or somewhere in the middle.
You can be good at repartee without being intentionally nasty, too.
Also I just got the title reference, “When You Assume…” is a reference to the saying “When you assume you make an ass out of you and me.”

That’s it, get her to hate you even more by despising the life she wants to lead.

Gosh, I sure hope so. And whoever it is, I hope she enjoys it. Even if it’s a boy.(That’s just me again, never mind.)
If that is an intentional burn, Red is a heck of an actress. Look at the eyebrows in the last panel, conveying regret and a bit of worry for the trouble her schedule caused other people. Deb will be convinced it was deliberate but there is nothing she can point at as evidence. 🙂

I guess Carlos never read Nisekoi?
Because in Nisekoi I am pretty sure that IS the style

Red needs to learn about the girl on girl psychological warfare that goes on. Having a known enemy/rival might help with that.
The odd thing is given how good she is without even trying I hate to think how much talent she’d have if she was doing it on purpose.
Is Deborah Fayet this universe’s younger sister of Morgan Fayet, or have I misremembered he name?
