# 28 Too Close To Tome
Jun11
Hey kids, I don’t think that’s the FBI, has Melvin even been gone long enough for an AMBER alert to be in effect?
To which entity would you report a magical disappearance?
So, whether you’re safe at home, working late, or have disappeared yourself, remember to vote! Thanks for reading!
Looks like MIB are after Kazoom and he is going to do a runner.
Getting the feeling that Melvin will be found in the book that just floated up and opened in front of Kazoom.
Nahhh he’s the chupacabras that guy a few strips back reported, a backwards in time travelling chupacabras.
Just remember.. their watching you….
I’m just an average man, with an average life. I work from 9 to 5. Hey, Sol, I pay the price! All I want is to be left alone, in my average home, but why do I always feel like I’m in the twilight zone?
(I always feel like, somebody’s watching me!) O-O
Just making sure I understand what happened in these last two strips:
Melvin gets bit by his Dad’s grimoire, which draws blood. He puts the tome in his pack. As he turns to leave, an aura surrounds him and he disappears.
In today’s strip, Kazom is left looking at the pile of Melvin’s mundane clothing–including pack, briefcase, shirt, and boots. He then sees a Black Van drive by, which rolls its windows up when Kazom makes eye contact.
Kazom either sucks on the end of his tail, or puts one paw to his mouth while holding his elbow with his other paw–his expression is more consistent with the latter gesture. He sees the van driving away just as the book floats up out of Melvin’s pack and opens itself for Kazom.
Is that about right?
[Thanks, Riniko, for identifying the flying thing as the book. I had thought it was some kind of bird or insect or the like.]
That’s pretty much my take, except, Kazom licks his paw and has his eyes closed, seeming inconspicuous as van is approaching. Then window goes up in van and it continues past. That’s when he hustles in the house w Melvin’s things, still paying attention to guys in van.
I wonder if this means Melvin is in the nude.
I expect Melvin is in proper wizard’s robes.
And, yes, Kazom is licking his paw. Good catch.
Of course, if he really wanted to be inconspicuous, he’d be licking his butt.
Hahahaha! Though, cats are butt lickers out of necessity. This reminds me a bit of the strip where Susan walks in on Kazom on the toilet and his reaction was to meow. As if that would mask the fact he was on the toilet reading.
Now I’m wondering how long he’s been a cat. He sure seems like he’s trying to act the way he thinks a cat should, in those instances.
Also, the book did appear to be activated by Melvin’s blood, but though he did feed it, in a sense, it was entirely unintentional. His intention was to unlock so he could open. Actually, he says something about checking out the book right before he disappears. I think Riniko may be right, he’s probably in the book.
I wonder how long he’ll be gone and whether he’ll even make it to the tournament now.
Things like that are always “unintentional”. The Powers depend on that kind of carelessness.
Is that all Melvin’s cloths on the ground in panel one? Does that mean Melvin is butt naked wherever he is?
No, Kazom is not sucking his paw; you can see Kazom’s right arm beside the much thicker appendage–thick as a kangaroo’s and prehensile as a new world monkey’s.
My take is that Kazom is using his magic trying to scan through the book before Melvin’s mom comes back.
Frame 3-the middle frame in the ministrip showing the reaction of the van driver.
I don’t know what he’s doing with his tail in the big frame after that.
Aargh, no, that is not his tail either–look at the stripes. His tail has a black tip.
