Red’s First Steps: Page 13
Ok, let’s get to it. Why is the page so late this time? Well, multiple reasons.
It’s true that I had a complicated weekend, with the usual suspects like connections issues, IRL business, and some old fashioned procrastination that I am fully responsible for. But in truth, I also had some writer’s block on this one. Transition pages aren’t always easy. You need them to link important events together, but the fact that there isn’t much going on within them makes them a difficult beast.
I originally had a different page planned, which was a little more mean spirited, but I scrapped that to show a different side of Mary. We know by now what intentions Mary has for her new daughter in the present, but I wanted to show that she would still react like any other mother to this kind of event, at first. At least, I think this should be about right.
None the less, I’m truly sorry about the delay. The next page should be posted Sunday, to give this page some time to breath. After that, everything should be back on schedule.
Poor Red, even when his mom is trying to be a mother, she is just too handie.
“That man”? Would Henry be referring to Clarence’s biological father?
Also, “The Don”? Either Henry actually IS a Mob leader, or he likes to give the image of being so.
Hey Veny go snatch this Jeanie girl and bring her here.
I mean, he could be a professor at the University of Oxford in the UK. They are called Dons, for some reason. Does Henry do a lot of traveling? Maybe he is lecturing at Oxford? I’m going with that until proven otherwise, just because that would be funnier.
Also, noble landholders in Spain and its American possessions were called Dons (e.g. Don Diego de la Vega in “Zorro”). Given that they live in Southern California, Henry could be calling himself a Don because his direct ancestor was one of these 19th century landowners.
He could also be referring to Red’s grandfather. Red overheard Henry instructing someone to investigate someone she called “Gramps” as she entered the room. Whether that’s Reds maternal, paternal or even honorary grandfather has not been explained.
Given that the man to be investigated has the surname “Walsh”, which is Mary’s maiden name, then it is probably a relative of hers.
it’s ok Carlos, I understand. Red really wants to tell her folks what happened, but she doesn’t know if they’ll believe her. also, what could Red’s mom be hiding about Southeil.. and why does she want Red to take her place there?
We already know what Mary intention are once she got use to the idea that her son is now her daughter. She want her daughter to take her place in the Southeil school for girls where they recruit girls into being witches. She want to do with Tiffany what she could not do herself, but, now she get a second chance to do it through Tiffany her new daughter. After a few days, Mary is perfectly on board with the idea of her son being her daughter and probably doesn’t want Tiffany going back to being her son now again.
Personally, I would like to see more back story on Tiffany before going back to the future like, seeing her doing exhibitions of female clothing for teenage girls. Mary sending Tiffany to girls finishing school to teach girl how to think and act like ladies. By the time we go back to the future from when she was 15 years old in 9th grate to becoming 16 years old in 10th grade, we can see all the things that she put through. All those things that she is being put through would affect her thinking and would have gotten to her to make her think more like a girl and less like a guy.
Most likely if Henry sent his goons after Jeannie she’d probably turns them into chicks too
Only if they are competent enough to actually find her.
Really, only parents handling their son becoming daughter correctly are Dunkels. https://www.egscomics.com/comic/2002-06-18
Could kazum have a love child?
Although it might be possible for Kazum to have a love child, I doubt that he has one and Clarence or Tiffany is him or her. Nice try, but, probably not.
So you’re retconning Red’s mom being abusive?
Not really. I have mention this before, but on the original run, we only had a single page to figure out Mary’s character, alongside some of Red’s later commentary about her. Both of which seemed to contradict the character’s bio (“Mary is an intelligent, beautiful woman who found herself the trophy wife of a prominent Hollywood producer. With her son transformed into a female, she sees it as a happy situation that could possibly bring them closer to each other.”) And her original appearance on JB. With that said, I haven’t really retcon anything about her, other than giving her the single mother background now.
She seems far nicer now, and she is in a better mood than during her first time in the comic, but outside this initial shock towards Clarence transformation, she has only show to take advantage of the situation, impose her will over the one of her child, seemingly manipulate her husband to play along, and intimidate Helga to do her biding. It all depends of how you define “abusive”, still, let me be clear, there is a lot more to Mary’s character and story than what we have seen so far.
Actually, Melvin Chronicle, really needed to be broken up into about six to ten section or more Arc to be told properly. That way you can concentrate on different part of the story and the different characters in the story. As it is right now, it kind of disjointed and hard to follow. There a lot of flipping back and forth between character otherwise.
