BJ, or Boyd Johnson, thinks himself the ladies man. He couldn't be more wrong, but that doesn't stop him from trying to woo the fairer sex when he can.
Red was a boy until a new genie tried to get Melvin a girlfriend. That's when the genie turned Red into a girl so Melvin could practice talking to girls, and forgot to turn her back before disappearing. Red is hopeful that her situation is only temporary.
Mythos survival tips: When communicating with an Elder God whose mind and perception are far beyond mankind, try at least being as especific as possible.
The store in front of us is: “The Cave of Wonders Pawn Shop”! We can assume that we are still in the present, because, of those power line and BJ is giving use GPS ordinance which he would not be able to do if they weren’t in modern day Earth. However we do know that it was in Salem, is where they had those witch trial’s of about 200 years or so ago took place. We also see three or four Genie Bottle in the Pawn Shop widow too. That Pawn Shop may have other witches or genie artifacts too, including the artifact that there looking for also. We will just have to wait and see.
You are thinking of the Witch Trials of Salem, Massachusetts. This is Salem, New Jersey, home of the Second-Oldest Courthouse in Continuous Use in the United States (And oldest in the State of New Jersey) and little more of note.
The Salem Witchcraft Trials took place in Salem, but the alleged witchcraft actually took place in an outlying hamlet named Salem Village, which was located in the modern town of Danvers and is mostly buried under Route 1–Interstate 95 interchange nowadays, though the old parsonage is still there. So be glad our intrepid crew didn’t end up there.
How that part of Salem eventually became Danvers is a fascinating bit of history which can be summed up as the British crown handed out a bunch of oversized, overlapping land grants that took decades to sort out. Which is horrifically absurd because the land wasn’t the crowns’ to grant in the first place. But the natives couldn’t object because they’d already been more or less wiped out by epidemic diseases brought by visiting European fisherman in the decades prior to colonization. And yes, I know this stuff because my choice of screen name was not an accident.
Oh, and according to Google, Salem is the 7th most popular town name but only the 15th most popular place name in the US, because there are a lot of named places (villages, neighborhoods, districts, post offices, etc.) that aren’t incorporated cities or towns.
It’s even better: GPS is based on exact clock. At this point, his phone knows the current time with a nanosecond accuracy, as otherwise the location would be WAY off. Of course, the chip MIGHT not tell this time to the main clock application.
Maybe there’ll be time to visit other New Jersey places of historical interest, such as Grover’s Mill, site of the 1939 Martian Invasion no one is supposed to remember…
Anyone picking up the bottle might be stuck with (or as) an annoying genie, but the bottle is all but guaranteed to be unharmed at the end of the arc. ^_^
Who saw that coming?
Not even I did!
SURPRISE!
Yog-Sothoth is a trickster and sent them to a store with the same name as their destination because they didn’t properly specify.
To Nobody’s surprise, apparently.

Your overall lack of faith on Yog-Sothoth is disturbing.
Or this is indeed a different dimension but the trickster makes it look like Salem, NJ.

Frankly? I was expecting Detroit.
Also, nice detail: Red’s eyes reflecting the lights of the magical gateway.
And I was expecting a Cleveland, Ohio joke.
And Red surounded by pink genie magic
How didn’t I notice that? Both Melvin and Red have magical auras.
Bugs Bunny: I KNEW i should’ve taken that left turn at Albuquerque. Daffy Duck: and I told YOU to turn West, at East Saint Louis.
It has been decades, yet somehow the joker never gets old.

Is that the Buckaroo Banzai Grover’s Mill, or the Spaced Invaders Grover’s Mill?
Panel 1 looks like the beginning of an anime intro
I dunno…but stay away from those bottles in the pawnshop window.
I’m sure the bottles are safe enough.
